金威點心

Since its establishment in 1991, family-owned and operated Kam Wai Dim Sum has contributed to a culture of sharing affordable, delicious food together. From their recently renovated storefront in Vancouver Chinatown, Kam Wai serves frozen dim sum classics to prepare at home, as well as ready-to-eat favourites to enjoy in their cozy lunchroom.

由家族經營的金威點心自1991年成立以來,在提供經濟實惠的美食文化方面作出了不少貢獻。金威點心在華埠最近翻新的店面中,出售供在家烹調的冷凍經典點心,以及可即時進食的飽點,讓顧客在舒適的餐廳中享用。

Reconnecting to Heritage

Food and culture are closely connected, and this is very true for Chinese culture. What, how and with whom we eat tells a lot about who we are and what we value. William Liu, co-owner of Kam Wai Dim Sum, envisions their business as a place where people can rediscover childhood flavours and connect with their cultural roots. William loves sharing his expertise with customers on how to prepare and experience Chinese steam buns, potstickers and dumplings at home, nurturing a thriving food culture.

與傳統文化重建關係

食物與文化息息相關,對於華人文化更是如此。我們吃什麼、如何吃、與誰一起吃都能反映出我們的身份以及我們所重視的價值觀。金威點心的合夥人之一 劉偉倫將他們的店舖打造成為一個讓人們可以重新品嘗兒時喜愛的味道並重新連接文化根源的地方。劉偉倫樂於與客戶分享如何在家中烹煮和進食中式蒸飽、鍋貼、餃子的專業知識,從而培養蓬勃的飲食文化。

Feeding the Generations

Kam Wai attracts customers of all ages, which is key to their success. The older generation has known the Liu family for years, and keeps coming back to support the store. They bring their children and grandchildren with them, introducing a new generation of patrons and welcoming them into the food culture. While Kam Wai also offers wholesale and catering, it is the retail business that has seen the most growth. For William Liu, this is exciting to see. His vision has always been to be present in the community and serve people directly.

為不同世代提供美食

金威點心的成功關鍵是店舖能吸引各個年齡層的顧客。老一輩的顧客多年來與劉氏一家諗熟,並一直支持該店的業務。而不少常客都會帶同自己的孩子和孫兒一起來,為店舖引入了新一代的顧客和令他們認識到飲食文化。雖然金威點心也提供批發和宴會服務,但零售才是他們增長最快的業務。對劉偉倫來說,這是一個令人振奮的現象。一直以來他都希望能在社區中直接為居民提供服務。

Hustle and Bustle

When William and his sister Susan took over the family business, they were committed to staying in Chinatown and building on their parents’ legacy. They also wanted to modernize and infuse it with new vitality. A successful renovation in 2021 made the storefront much more inviting, with more space for hot foods, frozen dim sum and dine-in seating. The shop has evolved into a bustling hangout spot, where regulars still feel at home, and friends and colleagues gather to share a meal. This community function will grow even more as Kam Wai expands its seating capacity.

熙來攘往

當劉偉倫和他的姐姐劉佩儷接手家族生意時,他們承諾留在華埠,並延續父母留下來的事業。他們還希望將店舖現代化並注入新的活力。金威點心的店面在2021年進行裝修後變得更能吸引人流,並騰出了更多空間供應熱食、冷凍點心和用餐座位。這家店舖現已發展成為一個熱鬧、顧客有賓至如歸感覺、以及讓朋友和同事一起分享美食的聚會場所。隨著店舖進一步增加座位數量,這種社區功能將會持續增強。

Staying True to Values

The Liu family see their business as a way of upholding Chinatown’s culture, and representing their Cantonese, Taiwanese and Chinese-Canadian heritages. They have been able to combine economic sustainability with staying true to core values, like keeping their foods affordable. Recently, the story of how William and Susan successfully took over and grew a Chinatown legacy business has made them examples for others. William Liu is aware of his role as an inspiration, and supports other second-generation business owners in pursuing their dreams as well.
