Hung Win Seafood is a family business at the edge of Chinatown, offering live, fresh and frozen seafood. This busy operation starts early morning to serve long-time customers, locals and restaurants across the region. Their market expertise has brought in sustainable, Ocean Wise options, while maintaining affordable and culturally important selections.

洪運海產是一家位於華埠邊緣的家族企業,為顧客提供游水海鮮和冷凍海產。 洪運繁忙的業務從清晨開始,服務對象包括老主顧、本區居民和整個地區的餐廳。他們藉著市場專業知識引入了可持續、合乎“海洋智慧(Ocean Wise)“標準的業務方針,同時亦保持了價格相宜和文化上重要的選項。

Extended Family

Opened in 1994, Hung Win Seafood has been run by siblings Andy, Tony and Julie, who have since welcomed the next generation into the family and into the business. Matching the siblings’ strong work ethic with passionate curiosity for the industry and a desire to share the significance of seafood in Chinese food traditions, Calvin Chan brings renewed energy to the succession of the shop. Through his apprenticeship as fishmonger, learning the ins-and-outs of the trade, Calvin continues the family’s service to their customers.

延伸的家族

Big Footprint

The small and humble storefront of Hung Win Seafood belies the footprint of its actual operations. With live seafood brought in almost daily from both coasts of the continent, at any given moment the staff are serving local residents, Chinatown elders, curious passersby, and restauranteurs from around the block or across the city. As they continue to grow their diverse customer base and offerings, the family maintains the importance of staying true to their roots as a business that builds up the local economy and keeps traditional Chinese seafood fare accessible.

Calvin describes with enthusiasm the depth and breadth of knowledge, skill and experience that his uncles and auntie have in the live seafood business, as it signals the roadmap for his own hands-on learning journey. A big part of this process is caring about what their customers need and what types of dishes they will be making. In being able to prepare the seafood properly and tailored to requests, the expertise at Hung Win Seafood has won them trust and built long-term relationships with customers.

Hung Win Seafood is a lively wet market, where the experience of shopping is as much a part of Chinatown’s cultural heritage as the products. The live fish tanks and open stall market format allow customers to see, touch and select exactly what they’re buying – maintaining an approach that is familiar to Chinese customers, while also inviting the uninitiated. As the business grows into the next generation, Calvin and the family continue to nurture its place in the cultural food economy of Chinatown.

Through short portraits, we hope to build support for the preservation of our community. It is an opportunity to get to know Chinatown’s merchants in a more personal way, and learn how they contribute to oral histories, food traditions and more.
